Pool cages installed in Bonita Bay in the late 1980s and 1990s have had 30–40 years of Florida’s UV, humidity, and coastal exposure. Aluminum oxidation — the chalky white or yellow discoloration on frame members — is more advanced on Bonita Bay cages than on any other community in our service area. At this age, oxidation is not a surface film; it is a significant change to the aluminum surface that requires aluminum brightener chemistry to dissolve. Cages that have gone multiple years without professional oxidation treatment may require multiple passes of brightener to fully reverse.

Screen mesh from the 1980s and 1990s is more brittle than modern mesh after decades of UV exposure. Standard pressure washer PSI that would clean newer Bonita Bay-era mesh without damage can tear 30-year-old screen on contact. We clean Bonita Bay cage screens at 100–200 PSI maximum — the lower end of even our standard range — with a 40-degree fan tip at 20–24 inches distance, rinsing inside-out to minimize resistance and tearing risk on aged mesh.

Dual coastal exposure from Gulf salt air and Estero Bay estuary also accelerates biological growth on Bonita Bay pool cage frames and screens faster than inland communities. Annual cleaning is the appropriate maintenance cycle — and on bay-adjacent properties, inspection at 9–10 months is worth scheduling to assess frame and screen condition before growth becomes deeply established.
