The gaps between pavers — the joints — are meant to be filled with joint sand. That sand is not just cosmetic; it is what locks the pavers together and keeps the whole installation stable. When the joints empty out, the pavers shift, weeds move in, and the surface starts to fail.
Filling the gaps correctly means sweeping joint sand into the gaps until they are full, compacting the pavers so the sand settles in, and setting the sand so it stays. It is the same process as paver sanding — because filling the gaps is sanding the pavers.
The best material for the job in Naples is polymeric sand. It contains binders that harden when activated with water, so once it is set it resists the rain washout and weed growth that plague open or loosely filled joints in Florida’s climate.

1. Clear out the gaps. Old degraded sand, weeds, dirt, and debris are cleared from the joints so the new sand has clean, open gaps to fill. The pavers are clean and dry first.
2. Sweep the sand in. Joint sand — polymeric for the best result — is swept across the surface and worked down into every gap until the joints are completely filled.
3. Compact to settle the sand. The surface is compacted so the sand drops and settles into the joints. More sand is swept in and compacted again until the gaps are filled to the proper level.
4. Set the sand. Excess sand is cleared off the paver faces, then polymeric sand is activated with a light water application so the binders harden and lock the filled joints.
Skipping the compaction step or under-filling the gaps is the most common mistake — the joints look full at first but settle low within weeks. Filling them to the proper level and compacting is what makes it last.
Play Sand
Regular play sand has no binders. In Naples’ rain it washes straight back out of the gaps and does nothing to block weeds.
Dirt or Soil
