🪨 Why Travertine Needs a Specialist
Natural Stone in Naples

Travertine is a form of limestone made mostly of calcium carbonate. It is the cream, ivory and walnut stone you see on so many Naples pool decks because it stays cooler under bare feet than concrete. That same chemistry makes it sensitive. Any acid, including the muriatic acid and many efflorescence cleaners used on concrete, will etch the surface and leave dull, rough patches.

The stone is also full of natural holes. Tumbled travertine has pitted faces, and many pavers have small voids that were filled at the factory. In our humidity those pits collect dirt, pollen and mildew, which turns the deck gray or black in shady corners and under the pool cage.

Pool water adds its own wear. Chlorine and salt splash out onto the deck and dry in the pores. On salt pools the dissolved salt can crystallize inside the stone, and over time that pressure flakes away the surface near the coping.

A professional job matches the method to the stone. We clean with stone-safe, pH-neutral or mildly alkaline solutions at low pressure and seal with a breathable impregnating sealer. If you have already read our guide on cleaning a travertine patio yourself, this is the done-for-you version with commercial products and a written service record.

If a cleaner is labeled for concrete, assume it will etch your stone.

💧 Impregnating vs. Enhancing Sealers
Sealer Choice

![Sealed natural stone pool deck in a Naples community](https://naples-pressure-washing.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Paver-Sealing-%E2%80%94-Grey-Oaks-Naples-FL.webp)Impregnating sealers protect the stone without a slippery filmTravertine needs a sealer that lets moisture out. Water rises through the stone from the sand bed below, and a surface film traps it. Trapped water clouds the finish and on salt pools speeds up flaking. That is why we use penetrating impregnating sealers on travertine and avoid high-gloss acrylic films.

An impregnating sealer soaks into the pores and lines them with a water and oil repellent. The stone looks almost the same as before, keeps its natural slip resistance and stays cool. An enhancing impregnator is the same idea with a slight darkening effect that brings out the veining and warmer tones.

On salt pool decks we use a sealer rated for salt exposure and extend it to the coping stones. Spills such as sunscreen, red wine and grill grease bead up instead of soaking in, which gives you time to wipe them away.

| Sealer | Look | Breathable | Good for |
| ------ | ---- | ---------- | -------- |
| Impregnating (natural) | No visible change | Yes | Pool decks, salt pools |
| Enhancing impregnator | Richer color and veining | Yes | Patios, lanais, entries |
| Topical acrylic film | Glossy wet look | Limited | Not recommended on travertine |
| Salt-rated impregnator | No visible change | Yes | Salt pool coping and decks |

🏝 Travertine We Clean & Seal
Common Installations

Pool Decks
### Inside the Pool Cage
Shade from the screen and splash from the pool make these the dirtiest and the most important to seal.

Coping
### Pool Edge Stones
Coping takes the most chlorine and salt. We clean gently around tile lines and seal the stone tops.

Lanais
### Covered Outdoor Rooms
Covered travertine collects grime and mildew more than sun damage. An enhancing sealer brightens it.

Entries
### Driveways & Walks
Travertine driveways need oil and rust treatment with stone-safe products only.

📋 How We Seal Travertine
Our Process

1
#### Inspect the stone
We check for old sealer, open holes, etching, salt flaking and loose pieces.

2
#### Protect the pool
Skimmers are covered and we control runoff so cleaning solution and sealer stay out of the water.

3
#### Stone-safe clean
Low-pressure rinse with a pH-neutral or mildly alkaline cleaner. Mildew is treated with a stone-safe soft wash solution.

4
#### Dry out
Travertine holds water deep in its pores. We seal only once the surface reads dry.

5
#### Seal
Impregnating sealer is applied, allowed to soak in, and the excess wiped off so nothing dries tacky on top.

6
#### Cure and record
We tell you when the deck can be walked on and the pool used, and leave a written service record.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Travertine Sealing Naples FL

How often should travertine be sealed in Naples? Most pool decks and patios need resealing every few years. A water drop test tells you: if water darkens the stone right away, it is time. Will sealing make my pool deck slippery? Not with an impregnating sealer. It works inside the stone and leaves the surface texture as it was.Can you get the black spots out of the holes?Usually yes. Those spots are mildew and dirt packed into the pits. Low-pressure cleaning with a stone-safe solution lifts most of it.Is salt water bad for travertine?Salt can crystallize inside unsealed stone and flake the surface. A salt-rated sealer and regular rinsing slow it down. Can I use a wet look sealer on travertine? We do not recommend a glossy acrylic film. It traps moisture and can cloud. An enhancing impregnator darkens the stone safely.Do you fill the holes before sealing? We clean out the open holes and point out any large voids at the inspection. Filling them is stone repair work, so we discuss it with you before the job instead of adding it on the day.
