🧪 What Efflorescence Is
The White Film Explained

Concrete pavers, block walls and slabs contain soluble salts from the cement. When water soaks in and then evaporates from the surface, it carries those salts with it and leaves them behind as a white or grayish powder. That deposit is efflorescence. It is a sign of moisture moving through the material, and it does not mean the pavers are defective.

It is common on new pavers during their first year and after any heavy soaking. In Naples that means the summer rainy season, daily irrigation and the base sand under the pavers staying damp. Pavers laid over a wet base can bloom again and again until the salts run out.

Efflorescence often gets mistaken for two other problems. A milky film inside an old sealer is usually trapped moisture called blushing, which needs a different fix. A crusty white ring around a salt pool is salt water drying on the deck. We figure out which one you have before treating anything.

The usual DIY reaction, a hard pressure wash, tends to spread the salts and drive water deeper, which feeds the next bloom. Plain water dissolves some of it, but it returns as the surface dries.

It has to be removed and the surface allowed to stop blooming first.

⚙️ How We Remove It
Method by Surface

![Clean sealed pavers after efflorescence treatment](https://naples-pressure-washing.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Paver-Sealing-%E2%80%94-Miromar-Lakes-FL.webp)Sealing comes after the bloom has stoppedOn concrete pavers and block, we use a buffered efflorescence cleaner made for cement-based products. It is applied to a pre-wetted surface, worked in with a brush, given a short dwell time and rinsed thoroughly. The pre-wetting keeps the cleaner at the surface where the salts are.

Natural stone is a different matter. Travertine, coral stone and shell stone are limestone, and acid-based efflorescence cleaners will etch them. On stone we use stone-safe products and gentle rinsing, and we tell you plainly when a deposit needs time and repeated rinsing instead of chemistry.

Heavy blooms may need two visits. We remove the first layer, let the surface go through a few dry days, and see whether more salt comes up before sealing. Once it stops, sealing slows water entry and makes a repeat bloom less likely.

| Surface | Cleaner | Notes |
| ------- | ------- | ----- |
| Concrete pavers | Buffered efflorescence cleaner | Pre-wet, brush, rinse well |
| Concrete block and stucco walls | Buffered cleaner, low pressure | Protect windows and plants |
| Poured concrete slabs | Buffered cleaner | Check for old sealer first |
| Travertine and coral stone | Stone-safe, non-acid | Never use acid-based products |
| Under old sealer (blushing) | Not efflorescence | Sealer is re-dissolved or stripped |

🔍 Where We See It
Common Situations

New Pavers
### First Year Bloom
New installs often bloom during the first rainy season. We usually wait it out before sealing.

Irrigation Zones
### Repeated Soaking
Sprinklers that hit the same pavers daily keep feeding salt to the surface. Adjusting heads helps.

Retaining Walls
### Block and Planters
Water behind a planter wall pushes salts out the face. We clean the face and note drainage issues.

After Washing
### Haze After Cleaning
A white haze after a pressure wash is often efflorescence brought up by the water.

#### Pre-wet and protect
The surface and nearby plants are wetted, and glass and metal are protected.

4
#### Treat and rinse
The right cleaner for the surface is brushed in, allowed to dwell and fully rinsed.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Efflorescence Removal Naples FL

Will efflorescence go away on its own?Sometimes, slowly. On new pavers it often fades as the salts run out, but in a wet spot it can keep returning for a long time. Why did it show up after I pressure washed?Washing pushes water into the pavers. As it dries, salts come to the surface and leave a white film.Is efflorescence harmful? It is cosmetic. It does not weaken the pavers, but it is a sign of moisture moving through them. Can I seal right after removal?Only once the surface stays clear through a few dry days. Sealing too early traps any remaining salts. Is the cleaner safe for my plants? We wet the plants before and after and rinse thoroughly. Runoff is kept away from beds. Can you remove it from travertine?Yes, using stone-safe products only. Acid-based cleaners would etch the stone.
